Working his way up the bill, he eventually became a headliner in theatres and cabaret clubs throughout Britain and the English speaking world, including Australia, America and South Africa. He appeared at the London Palladium in 1962 and over the years performed five Sunday Night at the London Palladium TV Shows.

He started his acting career in 1974 in Granada's The Stars Look Down and appeared in countless TV plays from then on for both Granada and BBC TV.

In 1978, he returned home to Gateshead to open his own music hall The Talk of the Tyne, which was a huge success and didn't have an empty seat for six years.

This programme was recorded at the Gala Theatre in Durham.
