Mitski - The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We - Indie Exclusive Deluxe Robin Egg Blue Vinyl
Indie Exclusive w/ Pink Die-Cut Slipcase, Robin Egg Blue Vinyl, Postcard. In what is Mitski's biggest, most epic and brightest album to date, the songs seem to open wounds and then actively heal them.
Here love is a journey through time to bless our tender days like the light of a distant star.
The album is filled with yearning for the grown-up, seemingly mundane heartaches and joys that are often unsung but feel enormous.
From the bottom of a glass, to a driveway covered in memories and snow, to a freight train thundering through the Midwest to the moon - it feels like everything and everyone is letting out a scream, screaming in pain and writhing for love .
Mitski has written these songs in small batches over the past few years, and they are marked by moments of noticing - noticing a sound out of place, a building groaning in decay, an opinion dividing a room, one Feeling that cannot be confined in a body.
Recorded at both the Bomb Shelter in East Nashville and Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles, it features an orchestra arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson and a full choir of 17 people - 12 in Los Angeles and 5 in Nashville - which was arranged by Mitski.
For the first time, it was important to Mitski to have a band recording together in the studio to create this new elevated sound.
Collaborating with longtime producer Patrick Hyland, the album has a wide range of references, from Ennio Morricone's bombastic spaghetti western scores to Carter Burwell's tundra-filled Fargo soundtrack, from the breathy intimacy of Arthur Russell to the strident liveliness of Scott Walker or Igor Stravinsky, from the joy of Caetano Veloso to the longing of Faron Young.
"The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We" puts forward the same hypothesis over and over again.
Without love, is anyone here? Love is always radical, which means it always disrupts, which means it always takes work to receive it.
This land, which already feels inhospitable to so many of its inhabitants, will soon feel hopelessly torn and tossed again - sometimes even without love.
This album offers a pleasant change. "This is my most American album," Mitski says of her seventh album, and the music feels like a profound act of testimony to this country, with all its private woes and painful contradictions.
