Righteous sounds! This 2 LP set charts the impact of radical black consciousness on a whole cross section of music. The subtitle "The Soul Of The Black Panther Era" doesn't really do justices to the range of the treasures on offer. Yes there's soul from Marvin Gaye, The Staple Singers, Sam Dees, Curtis Mayfield (with "Ghetto Child" a great unreleased demo of the song that became "Little Child Running Wild") plus lesser-known names such as George Soule (The Gritty "Get Involved"). But there's also jazz (Cannonball Adderley's "Walk Tall"), reggae (including Earl Sixteen's excellent "Malcolm X") and afro-funk from Miriam Makeba. The power of the spoken word is represented by Gil Scott Heron, The Last Poets and the undervalued Camille Yarbrough, while Chuck D and ADF bring the message up to date. I haven't even scratched the surface of what's on offer here. Ambitious, historically importantand of the highest musical quality throughout, this is a model of the compilers art. Trikont. 2005.
